What “unclaimed property” actually means
Unclaimed property is money that belongs to you but got separated from you: a forgotten bank account, a paycheck or refund check that was never cashed, a utility or rental deposit you never got back, an insurance payout, the contents of a safe-deposit box. When a business can’t reach the owner for a set period, California law requires it to hand that money to the State Controller’s Office, which holds it — indefinitely — until the rightful owner claims it. There’s no deadline. The state holds it for you until you ask for it. The catch is that almost nobody knows to ask.
